HOT DOCS + THE WESTDALE present CURIOUS MINDS

We are taking you “Back to School” this fall! The Westdale has teamed up with Hot Docs to present a thought-provoking and engaging series of weekly lectures at The Westdale. CURIOUS MINDS is a six-week lecture series designed to guide participants on a journey through new and exciting territory with topics curated by two distinguished guest speakers.

ITALY: FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, will focus on the diverse histories, monuments, culture and people of the various regions of Italy. This course takes us on a voyage through six regions of Italy, virtually unify the country from top to bottom. Very significantly, the voyage begins from the bottom and works its way up the Italian boot: Sicily, Campania, Lazio, Tuscany, Lombardy, and Veneto. Franco will start from a general overview of each region, and then enter the minute details through famous people, landmarks, monuments, and events, that make each diverse, unique, and united.

Tuesdays from 9 AM – 12 Noon

INSTRUCTOR: Franco Gallippi completed his Ph.D. thesis, Calvino: Reader of Leopardi and Galileo, at the University of Toronto in 2007. He was Assistant Professor of Italian at McMaster University in Hamilton, where he taught Italian language, literature, and cinema for four years. He is presently teaching at the Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto and is a public lecturer at Hot Docs. He publishes his work in academic journals in Italy, Canada, and the United States. He is no stranger to Hamilton either. Gallippi has been a guest speaker and host for many screenings with Hamiltons own Cinema Insieme.

ALL THAT GLITTERS: POP CULTURE OF THE 70s explores one of the most fascinating, exciting and turbulent periods of the 20th century. It’s easy to look back at the 1970s and simply be stunned by the hair and the platform shoes, by the mood rings and ‘da Fonz’. But underneath all that was a sign of deep turbulence. The fact is, the ‘70s was one of the most fascinating periods of the last century, and nothing provides a more vivid lens on the day than the pop culture it produced.

Tuesdays starting at 1 PM – 3 PM

INSTRUCTOR: Geoff Pevere is one of Canada’s finest film and pop culture writers who has been writing, teaching and broadcasting about movies, media and popular culture for more than 30 years. A former film critic with The Toronto Star and a regular contributor to The Globe and Mail
