African Empires – Episode One & Two

Join us on February 17 & 18 for free screenings of the historical documentary series African Empires, presented in partnership with MICRO and Centre Francophone.

Following the viewing, we will have the privilege of being enlightened by a historian, researcher, and writer, Dr. Amadou Ba, who will share his expertise on the subject and discuss the political, economic, and cultural contexts of the African empires highlighted in the series.
AFRICAN EMPIRES is a historical documentary series that sets out to explore the greatest kingdoms and empires of Africa before colonization. Shedding light on the legacies left to the contemporary world.

Episode 1: ZULU EMPIRE – South Africa 
Shaka Zulu, The People of the Sky 

It is in the early 1800s that the reign of the “African Napoleon” took place. Emperor with a reign as brief as it was intense, having conquered a significant part of southern Africa in just ten years, he gave birth to a glorious and proud people: the Zulus. This episode aims to trace the rise of one of the most powerful and respected peoples in African history: Ama Zulu, the people of the sky.

Episode 2: MALI EMPIRE
Soundiata Keïta, The Lion of Mandé

Amidst the vast plains and sun-drenched desert lands of West Africa once stood one of the largest and wealthiest empires in the world: the Mali Empire. It extended across significant portions of present-day Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Mauritania. This episode aims to delve into the history of the reign of Emperor Soundiata Keïta, the founder of the Mali Empire, and into the remnants of an empire that cast its influence across the entirety of Africa.

C’est au début des années 1800 que règne celui qu’on surnomma le “Napoléon africain”. Empereur au règne aussi court qu’intense, ayant conquis une majeure partie de l’Afrique australe en dix ans à peine, il donna naissance à un peuple glorieux et fier : les Zoulous. Cet épisode se propose de retracer l’avènement d’un des peuples les plus puissants et respectés de l’histoire africaine : Ama Zoulou, le peuple du ciel.

Episode 2 : EMPIRE DU MALI
Soundiata Keïta, Le lion du mandé

Au milieu des vastes plaines et des déserts de terre baignés de soleil de l’Afrique de l’Ouest s’élevait jadis l’un des plus vastes et riches empires du monde : l’Empire du Mali. Il s’étendait et englobait de grandes parties des actuels Mali, Guinée, Sénégal, Gambie, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire et Mauritanie. Cet épisode se propose de replonger dans l’histoire du règne de l’empereur Soundiata Keïta, le fondateur de l’Empire du Mali, et dans les vestiges d’un empire qui étend son rayonnement sur toute l’Afrique.
