Determined to build on the smash success of his debut feature Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino returned to the streets of Los Angeles in his sophomore effort, a noir-tinged moral tale featuring a motley crew of irreputable players: assassins, gangsters, drug dealers, “cleaners,” and “gimps.” The film follows two hitmen, Vincent (John Travolta, in a career-saving role) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson, in a career-making role), and their efforts to collect the mysterious contents of a briefcase belonging to their boss, Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). As their lives intertwine with those of Wallace’s wife (Uma Thurman), a boxer on the run (Bruce Willis), and a pair of bumbling thieves (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer), Jules and Vincent are exposed to coincidences, chance occurrences, and miracles that lead them to ponder the meaning of it all. Awarded the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Pulp Fiction remains Tarantino’s most iconic film, a mid-’90s mashup of pseudo-philosophy, cool cars, California English, and uncompromising violence.
