
Sultans of String: The Refuge Project – Visual Album
The Sultans of String, the Hamilton Immigration Partnership Council, The Westdale, and the Hamilton Arts Council invite you to the screening of the Cannes World Film Festival Winning Documentary: Sultans of String: The Refuge Project – Visual Album on June 16 at 7:30 pm The Westdale. This event is FREE with registration—part of Hamilton Arts Week. Reception at 6:30 pm, film at 7:30 pm Global Ambassadors of Musical Diversity, Sultans of String, will shine a light on the Plight of Refugees, featuring music and interviews from “Sanctuary” as well as sister album “Refuge,” both served up under lockdown. This ambitious, diverse, inclusive, and passionate film puts this world music supergroup face-to-face with a VIP roster of global ‘ambassadors,’ some of whom are recent immigrants and refugees to Canada and the U.S. and essential Indigenous voices. Addressing the struggles of life on Mother Earth has always inspired this band. In Sultans of String: The Refuge Project – Visual Album, they bring their unique brand of musical synergy and collaboration to bear on discussion and songs that speak to the challenges facing the world’s displaced peoples—their stories, their songs, their persistence and their humanity. Joined by an international cast, this three-time JUNO nominated band immerses themselves in the plight of the international refugee, and the humanitarian response that should greet everyone in search of a home. This 90-minute screening will be followed by a Q&A hosted by Amanda Martinez with Sultans of String bandleader and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient Chris McKhool. Awards and accolades for the Sultans of String: The Refuge Project – Visual Album WON: SELECTED: Amanda Martinez Amanda Martinez is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose music is an original blend of influences from her Mexican and South African roots. She has released four albums and her latest recording Libre is her most eclectic creation to date. Amanda has been recognized with multiple nominations as Latin Jazz Artist of the Year (Canada’s National Jazz Awards), Best World Music Artist (Canadian Folk Music Awards) and she was the winner of Best World Music Artist (Toronto Independent Music Awards). She also works as an actor in film and television and has guested on shows including Designated Survivor, Suits, Regenesis and Kim’s Convenience and will be guest starring on an episode of Private Eyes with Jason Priestly.
