With the help of allies Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman (Christian Bale) has been able to keep a tight lid on crime in Gotham City. But when an unpredictable criminal mastermind calling himself the Joker (Heath Ledger) suddenly throws the city into chaos, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his breaking point. Meanwhile, the emotionally volatile Dent, who finds himself in a love triangle with Bruce Wayne and their mutual love interest Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal), does an about-face when confronted with the apparent truth about justice in Gotham.
