Film Club

Join one of The Westdale Film Clubs!

We have kept the vision of The Westdale going during our temporary closure by creating online opportunities for our community to come together and do what they love – watch and talk about movies!

Each club will have up to 12 participants.  The current Film Clubs are:

Hamilton Public Library Kanopy Film Forum with Marcel Faulkner & Rick Jackman

The Elevated Genre with Robert Werthheimer

Hollywood Classics with Fred Fuchs

Music in Film Club with Alysha Main

Cinema Insieme Italian Film Club with Ernesto Virgulti

Coen Brothers Film Club with Carl Feldmann

There is no charge to join. All you need is the free Zoom app, and the streaming service that the films are available on. We will be using Netflix, Kanopy, Amazon Prime, Crave, Youtube, Criterion Channel and other streaming and rental platforms.  We will let you know of the films in advance and each Film Club will use the platforms that most of the group has.

Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing service you can use to virtually meet with others – either by video or audio-only or both, all while conducting live chats – and it lets you record those sessions to view later. You can also access with just a phone call. Think of it as Hollywood Squares with your film friends!

It’s easy to join a Film Club!

  1. Select the Film Club that you want to join. All of the film clubs and their dates are listed below. All Film Clubs will meet online on Zoom once a week. Don’t worry, if you don’t have Zoom, or need some help with it we are here to help.
  2. Sign up for your weekly Film Club
  3. We will send you an invitation to join a Zoom meeting that will have the time and date of the first time your club will meet. Included in that invitation will be the first film you need to watch on your own before the club meets
  4. Watch the film on your own time, and then join your club online

Each Film Club is limited to 12 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis.

My Brilliant Friend (L’amica geniale) is actually the title of the first (of four) novels by Elena Ferrante, called The Neopolitan Novels. The story is told from the perspective of a mature (60 year-old) female narrator, the voice-over of Elena in the TV series. The narrative structure employs a rather common technique in literature and film: the adult narrator reflects back on her life, beginning from childhood to the present. After a very brief scene (phone call from Lila’s son) the rest of the series is narrated chronologically, with occasional off-screen, voice-over commentary by the mature Elena.

The early 1950s: Italy is slowly recovering from the moral and economic devastation of the postwar period, but in many areas, especially southern Italy, progress remains very slow. The series is set in a small town outside Naples, where nothing ever changes. Amidst the poverty and never-ending drama and power struggles in the neighbourhood, the two protagonists, Lenù (Elena) e Lila (Raffaella), meet at age 6 in school. Although the girls have completely different backgrounds and personalities, they slowly develop a strong friendship and bond, but not without moments of envy, conflict and competition.

Ernesto Virgulti

Ernesto Virgulti is a Professor at Brock University, where he teaches in the Centre for Medieval & Renaissance Studies and in the Dept. of Modern Languages & Literatures. He has published in the areas of Medieval Literature (Boccaccio, Dante), Art (Rodin), Theatre (Pirandello), Literary Theory and Italian Cinema.
